What are Pulmonary Function Studies

Pulmonary function tests determine how well your lungs and airways function. Results from pulmonary function tests enable your physician to evaluate your breathing, make diagnoses, recommend treatment and follow your progress. Pulmonary testing is also used in many research studies. During the testing you will be given instructions and encouraged to give your best effort. Please feel free to ask questions during your test.

To get the most accurate results from your breathing tests:

  • Do not smoke for at least 4 hours before the test.
  • Do not drink alcohol for at least 4 hours before the test.
  • Do not exercise 30 minutes before the test.
  • Do not wear tight clothing that makes it difficult to take a deep breath.
  • Do not eat a large meal 2 hours before the test.
  • Do not take bronchodilator medications for at least 4 hours before the test.
